[NI007] OBITUARY
Walter Elmer Ireton, son of Winfield Scott and Alvira Shaner Ireton was born November 5, 1906 near Webb, Dewey County, Oklahoma. He passed from this life Wednesday, May 27, 1992 at the Community Hospital, Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 22 days.

His early years were spent in the Dewey and Custer County areas of Oklahoma. He received his schooling in the Center Point School near his home.

On December 23, 1931, Walter Elmer Ireton and Julia Elizabeth Hughes were united in marriage at Butler, Oklahoma. Three children were born to this union: two sons, Elmer Joe and Leroy F., and one daughter, Verlene K.

He became a member of the Rhea Baptist Church when he moved into that community. He was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a pianist for the church that he loved so very much.

Special interests of Mr. Ireton were playing the piano, reading, and most of all spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Ireton, four sisters, Cora Graybill, Annie Ireton, Jessie Stover, and Eunice Price, also one brother Edd Ireton.

Those left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife, Julia Ireton, of the home near Leedey, his sons, Elmer Joe Ireton and wife Marie of Uvalde, Texas; Leroy F. Ireton, and wife Delores of Choctaw, Oklahoma; and his daughter Verlene K. Yohn, and husband, Bill of Norman, Oklahoma. [NI010] 1920 US Federal Census gives Cora's place of birth as KS, but on the 1910 & 1920 censuses for her parents Winfield & Alvira Ireton, her place of birth on both is OK.

[NI033] In 1900, Charles P. Ireton and his wife Fanny E. Ireton lived in Otumwa Twp, Coffey Co, KS (see vol 11, e.d. 42, sheet 8, line t1). He is age 36 and was born in May 1861 in Illinois. Fannie was born in December 1864 in Kentucky and was 31 during the census. Perry E. Ireton was age 13, born March of 1887 in Kansas. John W. was born July 1897 in Kansas and was age 2. Hattie A. Ireton was born in Kansas Oct 1898 and was age 1. Fannie had birthed 6 children of which 3 were living in 1900. From Perry's birth date, we suspect that Charles married Fannie circa 1886 in Kansas. Charles owned his farm, but had a mortgage.

[NI042] "I Eda Ireton of Custer City, Oklahoma, being of sound mind and lawful age make the following statement as to my family record taken from the family Bible and my knowledge of facts . . . . Eda Ireton, born in Calhoun County, Michigan, Feb. 23, 1870,. Married Frank Austin Ireton, March 3, 1888 at Burlington, Kansas. Frank Austin Ireton born Jan 21, 1867 on the sight [sic] of the present Pullman car works of Chicago, Illinois . . . signed this 9th day of Sept. 1936."

From LaRoux Gillispie:

For the story about living on the old Pullman factory we obtained the following from the Chicago Historical Society on August 4, 1986.

The Pullman Palace Car Co. shops were constructed beginning in 1880 on the west short of Lake Calumet. The boundaries were the present 103rd-115th streets (north and south) and Lake Calumet and Cottage Grove Ave. Until 1889, when it was annexed to the city of Chicago, it was part of the Village of Hyde Park, Illinois. Until the Pullman works were constructed, the land was undeveloped, vacant prairie, {editor's note: Today this is near the intersection of I94 and I57 highways. The Pullman site was about 5 miles east of the town of Blue Island on Chicago's south side}

[NI047] Died possibly December 1929 in CA.

[NI065] Year of birth in question.

[NI083] Worked for Cain's Coffee Company.

[NI091] Never married.
